Corobrik in the Community
The business community has a crucial role to play in the upliftment and economic empowerment of previously disadvantaged communities and individuals. As one of the country’s leading manufacturers Corobrik is firmly committed to this process and our Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme includes:
- education and training initiatives
- the empowerment of previously disadvantaged communities
- donations
Building Training Centres
At the core of Corobrik’s job creation endeavours, are the Corobrik Building Training Centres that focus on equipping unskilled people with building and bricklaying skills such that they can be gainfully employed.
The first Corobrik Building Training Centre was established in 1994. Corobrik now operates 3 schools, in Durban, Stellenbosch and Midrand that are accredited in terms of the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA).
The Corobrik KwaZulu-Natal Building Training Centre was in early 2008 accredited as a ‘Construction Centre of Excellence’ by the Construction Education and Training Authority.
Training caters for both onsite and tuition at Corobrik Building Schools
Training courses cover both practical laying of masonry and paving materials.
Women in Construction
In accordance with the Employment Equity Act, we firmly support SAWIC (SA Women in Construction). We have donated bricks towards the construction of a building training centre for women and in 2002, following a challenge by the Honourable Minister of Public Works, Stella Sigcau, we sponsored the attendance of 12 women at a 45 day, CETA-accredited bricklaying course.
For some time women have equalled the feats of their male counterparts by successfully graduating from the Corobrik KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape Building Training Centres, some of them having walked off with top awards.
Over the years no less than 80 women have been trained through Corobrik Building Training Centres.
Donations
Corobrik’s donation policy focuses mainly on the donation of building materials (that Corobrik manufactures) to “sustainable” projects within previously disadvantaged communities in and around Corobrik’s operations and financial contributions to charities supporting the needy.
Over the years, Corobrik has donated millions of its products to such projects, including community schools, crèches, facilities for the aged, places of safety and education development facilities for the mentally and physically disabled and sanctuaries for orphaned children.
