Corobrik bricks and pavers are manufactured in different sizes. The main brick size, in millimetres, is the South African Imperial measuring 222 [l] x 106 [w] x 73 [h]. Most bricks in South Africa are produced in this format. Other brick sizes Corobrik produces at one or more factories include:

  • Coromaxi 90 - 222 [l] x 90 [w] x 114 [h]
  • Coromaxi 140 – 290 [l] x 140 [w] x 114 [h]
  • CoroJem – 222 [l] x 140 [w] x 73 [h]

All products are manufactured in accordance with SANS 227:2002 Standard Specifications for Burnt Clay Masonry Units.

How to Care for Clay Brickwork

General Tips:

  • Always cover the brickwork during building or renovating operations to prevent paint and mortar stains.
  • Always test any proposed cleaning method on a small, unobtrusive area and examine after a week before tackling the job as incorrect cleaning can cause permanent damage.

We recommend hiring a specialist contractor to remove stains from large areas of brickwork. For small stains, here are a few techniques:

  • Use wooden scrapers or stiff fibre brushes in order to avoid damaging the bricks.
  • Wet the brickwork with clean water before applying chemical solutions in order to prevent the bricks from absorbing the chemicals. Rinse thoroughly after the chemical application. Remember to protect metal window frames, doors, plants etc from chemical splashes.
  • Most of the chemicals mentioned are caustic, acidic or poisonous. Wear protective clothing and goggles when using them. The chemicals should only be used indoors under conditions of good ventilation.
  • Identify the type of stain or deposit before undertaking any cleaning operation.
  • Unsightly staining often occurs when bricks are laid incorrectly. Bricklaying must be undertaken in a professional manner.

Efflorescence

This white furry deposit on the brick is the crystallisation of soluble salts on or below the surface of brickwork. It is caused by the evaporation of water containing the salts inside the brickwork. Such salts can come from the brick itself and/or the sand used in the mortar, or both. Efflorescence is usually washed away by a shower of rain but if it persists, can be removed with a stiff bristle brush.

Thermal Performance

The basic characteristic of materials with thermal mass is their ability to slowly absorb heat, store it and at a later time release it. The greater the diurnal temperature range (South Africa’s different climates are characterised by well defined temperature swings between night and day), the greater the benefit from increased thermal mass in walls. The clay brick presents an easy and economical way of increasing thermal mass in walls, resulting in better heat conduction and longer periods of time spent within the thermal comfort range.
